Christ Church, the oldest church in Greenville, SC, was organized in 1820 as St. James Mission. Adjacent to the main church building is the Markley Chapel built in 1880.

A founder of the church, Mr. Edward Croft, deeded two acres for the church cemetery in 1835.

That same year, Mrs. Sarah Crittenden was the first to be buried near the north walls of the present church.

Mr. Vardry McBee, one of Greenville’s city forefathers, is also buried in this cemetery.
