Situated along the Haw River near Burlington, NC, Glencoe Mill Village has undergone extensive renovation since it was purchased by Preservation North Carolina in the late 1990s. A mill and thirty-two worker houses on approximately 110 acres comprise the historic site. Individuals have bought and renovated the houses keeping much of the character and charm of the original post and beam structures. I remember visiting the Glencoe community in the early 50s when my mother and her sisters would visit my Aunt Lorena in one of the houses on the left. There were two swings on her front porch that creaked loudly when swinging in them. Also, I remember how large her kitchen seemed with its long table and benches for seating. We had chairs at our table at home!
