This classic colonial frame house of the 1820’s was the summer home for William Choice, a prominent Greenville lawyer.

I remember visiting the Glencoe community in the early 50’s when my mother and her sisters would visit my Aunt Lorena in one of the houses on the left. There were two swings on her front porch that “creaked” loudly when swinging in them. Also, I remember how large her kitchen seemed with its long table and benches for seating. We had chairs at our table at home!

William Choice House
Northern Greenville County, SC

In Ms. Laura Ebaugh Smith’s book, Bridging the Gap, a mention is made that this house was used as a stage coach stop for travelers going to Asheville. This photo is one of two taken in December 1971 in what is now the parking lot of Publix Supermarket at University Square Shopping Center near Furman University. William Choice is buried in the north section of Christ Church Episcopal cemetery in downtown Greenville. (See Christ Church image below.)

Glencoe Historical Mill Village
Alamance County, NC

Situated along the Haw River near Burlington, NC, Glencoe Mill Village has undergone extensive renovation since it was purchased by Preservation North Carolina in the late 1990s.

A mill and thirty-two worker houses on approximately 110 acres comprise the historic site. Individuals have bought and renovated the houses keeping much of the character and charm of the original post and beam structures.

Christ Church Episcopal
Downtown Greenville, SC

Christ Church, the oldest church in Greenville, SC, was organized in 1820 as St. James Mission. Adjacent to the main church building is the Markley Chapel built in 1880. A founder of the church, Mr. Edward Croft, deeded two acres for the church cemetery in 1835. That same year, Mrs. Sarah Crittenden was the first to be buried near the north walls of the present church.
