In the case of The Red Star Grocery, there is a book, My Father’s World, that needs to be on everyone’s reading list. An easy read and incredibly well written, My Father’s World will transport you to a way of life that was hard, inspiring, humorous at times, and challenging day to day.

“Life, I have been told, is what happens while you are trying to decide what to do with your life. What happened to us was the Red Star Grocery.”
—Marah Wand Rutland

“What a pleasure to read a book like this in today’s world of fast living with no time for the less fortunate.“
— Rose T. Wilkins, Sandlapper Magazine

Whatever your occupation or profession, whether you’re attending college or retired, I encourage you to get a copy of this book and read it. Every South Carolinian should read it. The experiences and lives of “Mr. and Mrs. Red” and their Red Star Grocery will fill a place in your heart that you didn’t know you had.
— Steve M.

Colors of September, Painted flag on driveway

Colors of September
Northern Greenville County, SC

I drive by this entrance to a local girls’ home in northern Greenville County nearly every day. Two days after 9/11, this flag appeared on the driveway, painted by the residents of the home. It is there today, as a reminder of one of the most tragic days in America’s history.

For months after shooting this photo, I was not happy with any title that I gave it. Then, the idea came to have a name-the-photo contest. There was no question who we would call about the idea. Our long-time artist and educator friend, Pat Grills, agreed to help us by having his art students at Riverside High School participate in the contest. After a couple weeks, Pat, his wife Cathy, Janie and I met at a restaurant and went through the pile of names on index cards. A student named Amy nailed it with, “Colors of September.”
